Dr. Maria Montessori, born in 1870, began studying mathematics, physics, and natural science at the University of Rome. She was one of the highest-ranking students in her class and became the first female doctor in Italy.

In 1907 Dr. Montessori established the first Montessori School in the ghetto of Rome. With no materials and an untrained assistant, she observed the children and provided them with the experiences they lacked.

Today the Montessori Method is used world wide and proven to be far ahead of its time.

THE MONTESSORI METHOD
The Montessori method reflects great respect for the uniqueness of each child. The child is invited to take an "active" and not "passive" role in his/her development. This equates to a truly individualized education. Montessori teachers carefully observe each child and then introduce them to materials and lessons based on their interest and readiness. Each child learns at his/her own pace in an independent fashion. Young children want and need to experience the world on their own. As early as 18 months, they begin their quest for independence. Oviedo Montessori School provides children the necessary tools, guidance and opportunities to develop independence and self-reliance. Montessori classes are designed in such a way that instills a sense of security and neatness in the child. Everything has its place and lessons are always put away, by the child.

GOALS OF OVIEDO MONTESSORI SCHOOL
Developing a positive attitude toward school: Learning activities and unique learning tools are student-centered and individualized. Each child chooses a lesson that appeals to him and works at his own pace. A lesson can be repeated until self satisfaction is achieved. This method builds a positive attitude towards learning.

Helping each child develop self-confidence: Lessons are designed so that each new step is built on the previous step and on what the child has learned. This ensures the success of completion which in turn builds a child's self-confidence, fostering inner security and a sense of order.

Assisting each child in building a habit of concentration: Through carefully designed individualized activities, children stay focused and learn to extend their attention.

Fostering lasting curiosity: Children are provided with opportunities to discover new situations and objects. Curiosity is one of the most important elements in learning.

Developing habits of initiative and persistence: Oviedo Montessori School's materials are carefully chosen and designed for activities which are geared towards a child's inner needs. The child learns to initiate an activity, which in turn is an essential quality of leadership.
